Massive congratulations to Tata Gloria Berinyuy, who has collaborated with the CRISPR Dx team at OBL during her internship at Mboalab in Cameroon, for winning the Cameroon Falling Walls Lab Competition 2023 with a ticket to represent Cameroon in Berlin from November 7-9!
Gloria presented her work on CRISPR diagnostics for neonatal and maternal infections and credited the fantastic Mboalab team as well as her partnership with the University of Cambridge with the win.
I owe this win to the entire Mboalab (Thomas Hervé Mboa Nkoudou, PhD, Stephane Fadanka, Yanick Diapa, Therese Minffih, Mujar Minette Shalo, Niels nguedia kaze) team and our partners at the University of Cambridge (Jenny Molloy) for their unwavering support and guidance.
Gloria’s success is also a fantastic testament to the opportunities provided by the Bioinnovation Hub at Mboalab, which OBL and our nonprofit spinout Beneficial Bio have supported since 2019.
The journey all started when I began an internship at Mboalab Biotech to work on the same project. Mboalab is a one-of-a-kind biotechnology lab in Cameroon whose main objective is to catalyze sustainable local development and improve people’s living conditions through open science. Here, I was trained and guided by great supervisors who took me through the genesis of this project to the point where we are now. Mboalab provided me with the technological know-how and expertise to execute this project, and more importantly, they sparked in me the zeal for developing cost-efficient and easy-to-use diagnostic tests that could be deployed in resource-linked settings.
